Gardiner, Lord (1900-1990), was British lord chancellor from 1964 to 1970. He became a barrister (lawyer who argues cases in the highest courts) in 1925 and became a king's counsel in 1948. Gardiner advocated legal reform and sat on several legal reform committees. He also campaigned for the abolition of capital punishment. Gardiner became chairman of the Bar Council and of the Executive Committee of Justice.
