Freyberg, Bernard (1889-1963), Baron Freyberg, was a British military commander in World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). He was born in London on March 21, 1889, and was educated at Wellington College, in New Zealand. He won the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valor in the British armed services, in 1916. In 1917, he was promoted to brigadier general.
