French, John Alexander (1914-1942), an Australian corporal, was awarded the Victoria Cross for heroic action in World War II (1939-1945). French was killed in action on Sept. 4, 1942, when his battalion attacked a Japanese position east of the Buna Mission in New Guinea. This attack led to the defeat of the Japanese at Milne Bay.
