Fort Monmouth, MON muhth, New Jersey, is the headquarters of the United States Army Communications-Electronics Command. It also houses the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School and electronics research and development laboratories. The fort lies about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of New York City. The post was established in 1917. It received its present name in 1925 to honor the soldiers who fought on the fields of Monmouth during the Revolutionary War in America (1775-1783). In 2005, federal officials approved a plan to close Fort Monmouth. Most of its communications and electronics activities will move to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School will move to West Point, New York.
