Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, houses the headquarters of the First United States Army and the National Security Agency. The fort covers about 5,400 acres (2,200 hectares) and lies about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Washington, D.C. The post was established in 1917 to house troops drafted during World War I (1914-1918). It was originally named Camp Meade for Major General George Gordon Meade, a Union Army commander during the Civil War (1861-1865). In 1928, the post was renamed Fort Leonard Wood. The Army gave the post its current name in 1929.
