Fort Eustis, YOO stihs, Virginia, houses the United States Army Transportation Center and School and is the home of the Army Transportation Corps. It covers about 8,300 acres (3,360 hectares), and lies 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of Williamsburg. Other activities at the fort include the Aviation Logistics School, the Training Support Center, and the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy. Fort Eustis has the nation's only all-military-operated railway system. The post was set up as a Coast Artillery training area in 1918, and named for Brigadier General Abraham Eustis, an artillery officer of the early 1800's. In 2005, federal officials approved a plan that will reorganize Fort Eustis. The plan includes moving the Army Transportation Center and School from Fort Eustis to Fort Lee, Virginia, and moving the Army Training and Doctrine Command headquarters from Fort Monroe, Virginia, to Fort Eustis.
