Fort Benning, Georgia, is the site of the United States Army Infantry Center. This command includes the infantry school and the Army School of the Americas. The infantry school also conducts airborne and ranger training courses. The post covers 182,000 acres (73,650 hectares). It lies 9 miles (14 kilometers) south of Columbus on the Chattahoochee River. The Army established Camp Benning in 1918. It was named after Brigadier General Henry L. Benning, who served in the Confederate Army in the American Civil War (1861-1865).
