Field, Barron (1786-1846), an English-born judge and critic, privately printed the first book of poetry ever published in Australia, First Fruits of Australian Poetry, in 1819. The book consisted of two poems by Field, "Botany Bay Flowers" and "The Kangaroo." Field was a friend of Charles Lamb, the famous English essayist and critic (see Lamb, Charles). Lamb's essay To Distant Correspondents was addressed to Field.
