Fabianism, a socialist movement, began in 1884 with the formation of the Fabian Society in London. It had the object of "reconstructing society in accordance with the highest moral precepts." It was named after the Roman general Quintus Fabius Maximus, whose nickname was Cunctator (Delayer). The Fabians modeled their tactics on his caution, believing in socialism through evolution and not by revolution.
