Evert, Chris (1954-...), an American tennis champion, ranked as the number-one woman player in the world for six years. Evert never ranked lower than fourth from the year she turned professional in 1972 until her retirement in 1989. She was noted for her technically perfect forehand and two-handed backhand, both delivered with accuracy, power, and depth. She was at her best on clay court surfaces and won 125 consecutive matches on clay from August 1973 to May 1979. Evert won 18 Grand Slam titles, winning Wimbledon in England three times, the French Open seven times, the United States Open six times, and the Australian Open twice.
