Emden was a German cruiser that was stationed in the Philippine Sea at the outbreak of World War I (1914-1918). During the early stages of the war, the cruiser moved into the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. It sank or captured 22 merchant ships, raided Penang Harbour, and shelled an oil station at Madras (present-day Chennai), India.
