Edwards, Sir Hughie (1914-1982), an Australian airman, won the Victoria Cross while serving with the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II (1939-1945). During a daylight raid on the German port of Bremen on July 4, 1941, he led his formation overland at extremely low altitudes, carrying away telegraph wires, passing under electric cables, and flying through a formidable balloon barrage. In the hail of fire near the target, every aircraft was hit, and four were destroyed. Edwards pressed home the attack without further loss.
