Ebola, eh BOH luh, virus is a virus that has caused several outbreaks of deadly disease in Africa. Its name comes from the Ebola River in northern Congo (Kinshasa). The first known outbreaks occurred in this region and in western Sudan in 1976, killing hundreds of people. Outbreaks also occurred in Sudan in 1979, in western Zaire in 1995, and in Uganda in 2000. Zaire is now called Congo (Kinshasa).
