Domett, Alfred (1811-1887), a politician and poet, was premier of New Zealand in 1862 and 1863. His government was in power at the height of the New Zealand Wars. It proposed that Maori who rebelled against the British authorities, particularly over land disputes, should have their land confiscated. Domett was born on May 20, 1811, in Camberwell, England. He died on Nov. 2, 1887, in London.
