Derwentwater, Earl of (1689-1716), James Radcliffe, an English nobleman, supported James Edward Stuart, The Old Pretender, in the first Jacobite rising, in 1715. (See Jacobite risings.) He was born in London on June 28, 1689. After the death of Queen Anne, in 1714, a plot to restore the exiled Stuart family to the throne led to a Jacobite rebellion in Scotland. Derwentwater led a similar movement in England, but his tiny force surrendered to government troops at Preston. Derwentwater was captured. He was executed on Feb. 24, 1716.
