Dana, James Dwight (1813-1895), was an American geologist, mineralogist, and zoologist. He was mineralogist and geologist of a government exploring expedition in the Pacific Ocean under Lieutenant Charles Wilkes from 1838 to 1842. He also collected and studied corals and crustaceans (hard-shelled water creatures). He was a professor at Yale from 1856 to 1890.
