Culloden is a moor in Highland Region of Scotland, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Inverness. It is famous for the battle fought there in 1746, when the Scots, under Prince Charles Edward Stuart, were defeated by the English, led by the Duke of Cumberland. A stone cairn (memorial made of stones) marks the site of the battle. Nearby are the Graves of the Clans and the Well of the Dead. The Stones of Clava are nearby, on the other side of the River Nairn. These stones, erected during the Bronze Age, are among the most important ancient remains in Scotland.
