Split

Split (pop. 190,000) is a city in southern Croatia that developed from an ancient Roman town. It lies along the Adriatic Sea. The city's name in Italian is Spalato. Split was originally built about A.D. 295 within the walls of the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The remains of the palace still stand in what is now the center of Split.
