Caulfield Cup is one of Australia's major horse-racing events. It is run over 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) at the Caulfield race course in Melbourne every year in mid-October. The Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup together make up the Melbourne Spring Double. The Caulfield Cup began in 1879. In 1885, the event attracted 41 competitors, and a record crowd of 20,000 saw 16 horses fall in a spectacular crash. In 1909, two horses, Blue Book and Aborigine, finished first in a dead heat.
