Cassino, kuh SEE noh (pop. 32,787), is an Italian town about 75 miles (121 kilometers) southeast of Rome. The famous Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino has been the home of Benedictine monks since A.D. 529. Fierce fighting took place in Cassino during World War II (1939-1945), when German troops made a stronghold of the city and resisted Allied attempts to seize it. The city was almost entirely destroyed during the war, but it was later rebuilt. See also Monte Cassino.
