Butlin, Sir Billy (1899-1980), a pioneer of vacation camps, or holiday camps, in the United Kingdom, opened his first camp in Skegness in 1936. He expanded his business after World War II (1939-1945). The camps primarily served lower income families. Butlin eventually operated nine camps that served a million vacationers a year.
