Brunner, Thomas (1821-1874), was a British explorer and surveyor who made the first extensive explorations in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. In 1846, he began his most famous expedition, in which he traveled from Nelson to Titira Point, in southern Westland, and back to Nelson in a total of 550 days. He and his party suffered great hardship on this trip.
