Bloch, blok, Konrad Emil (1912-2000), an American biochemist, discovered how animal cells produce a fatty substance called cholesterol from acetic acid. His findings are seen as an important step in learning how to control certain circulatory diseases. Bloch shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with biochemist Feodor Lynen of Germany for this work.
