Black and Tans were members of an auxiliary police force recruited from former soldiers in Britain for service in Ireland in 1920 and 1921. They worked with the police force to suppress the Irish Republican Army and became notorious in Ireland for their ruthlessness. The Irish people called them Black and Tans because they wore khaki coats and black trousers and caps.
