Bill of lading is a written receipt for goods sent by means of public transportation. Such bills are normally used in the shipping of goods by sea. A bill of lading provides proof of ownership of goods and evidence of the contract between the person who shipped the goods and the carrier. See also Contract; Negotiable instrument.
