Bellingshausen, Fabian von (1778-1852), a Russian naval officer, sailed around the South Polar region between 1819 and 1821. His expedition sailed from Kronshtadt on the Baltic Sea to the Antarctic Circle. Bellingshausen reached several unexplored islands in the Fiji Island group. He was born on Oesal Island (now Saaremaa), Estonia. Some historians give his first name as Thaddeus.
