Beckett, James Camlin (1912-1996), became a leading Irish historian. His books The Making of Modern Ireland 1603-1923 (1966) and A Short History of Ireland (1952) influenced history teaching throughout Ireland and in other countries. Beckett wrote or edited many articles in journals and a number of other important books, including Confrontations (1973) and The Anglo-Irish Tradition (1976). He became a broadcaster on radio and television.
