Bayou, a term used widely in the Gulf Coast states, especially Louisiana, for a swampy area. Such areas are often found in delta regions and in places where rivers once flowed. They support a wide variety of plants and animals, including bald cypress trees, duckweed, water hyacinths, crawfish, muskrats, and barred owls.
