Barassi, Ron (1936-...), an Australian Rules football player, took part as a player, captain, or coach in 10 Victorian Football League premierships. Ronald Dale Barassi was born on Feb. 27, 1936, in Guildford, near Castlemaine, Victoria. He made his name as a ruck rover for Melbourne, which won the premiership six times between 1955 and 1964. In Australian Rules football, a ruck rover is one of three players called the followers or the ruck who should follow the ball wherever it goes. Barassi became captain coach for Carlton in 1965 and played 50 matches for the club. In 1975, he coached North Melbourne to that club's first ever premiership victory. He coached in the early 1980's and again in the 1990's, along with establishing a media career as a football commentator on television and in newspapers. See also Australian Rules football.
