Bancroft, Hubert Howe (1832-1918), an American publisher and historian, is remembered for History of the Pacific States (1875-1890) in 39 volumes. But this work was largely written by paid assistants, to whom Bancroft gave little credit. The history contains valuable reminiscences of Western pioneers. His other works include Resources of Mexico (1893), The New Pacific (1900), and The Book of Wealth (1910). He was born in Granville, Ohio.
