Baeyer, BEH yer, Adolf von (1835-1917), a German chemist, won the 1905 Nobel Prize in chemistry. He received the prize for his contributions to the synthetic dye industry and for his work on organic chemical structure (see Dye). He worked 20 years on his synthesis of a blue dye called indigo (see Indigo). He also studied the mechanism of reactions and contributed to physiological chemistry, especially in his research on uric acid.
