Aurukun is an Australian Aboriginal settlement on the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia. The area has rich bauxite deposits. The Uniting Church, one of Australia's largest Protestant denominations, administered the settlement from 1904 to 1978. In 1978, the Queensland state government took over Aurukun from the Uniting Church so the land could be used for mining bauxite.
