Athlone (pop. 7,354) is a town in County Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland. The town lies 70 miles (112 kilometers) west of Dublin on the River Shannon. The town has remains of a town wall dating from the 1500's and remains of a Franciscan abbey dating from the 1200's. Athlone has wool manufacturers and other textile industries. It is a market center for the surrounding farms.
