Ashdown, Battle of, was a battle fought during the Danish campaign to conquer England in the late 800's. In 871, the army of Wessex moved against the Danes and met them at Ashdown in south-central England. Ethelred, the king of Wessex, and his brother Alfred, later Alfred the Great, led the Wessex army and defeated the Danes.
