Arecibo ahr uh SEE boh, Observatory, is an astronomical observatory in Puerto Rico, 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of San Juan. It has the world's most powerful radio telescope (a telescope that collects and measures radio waves given off by objects in space). The telescope opened in 1963. Cornell University manages the observatory for the National Science Foundation.
