Akaka, Daniel Kahikina (1924-...), a Democrat from Hawaii, has been a member of the United States Senate since 1990. He was appointed to the Senate that year to succeed Spark M. Matsunaga, who had died. Akaka was elected later in 1990 to serve the remaining four years of Matsunaga's term. Akaka was elected to his first full term in the Senate in 1994.
