Adams, Gerry (1948-...), became the president of Sinn Fein, an Irish nationalist political party, in 1983. Sinn Fein is the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), a group that has long sought to unite the country of Ireland with Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.
