Accomplice, in law, is a person who participates with someone else in a crime, whether by planning it, carrying out the criminal act itself, or otherwise helping the offender. Such a person may be known as an accessory. Many legal systems make a distinction between an accessory before the fact (someone who assists or encourages another to commit a crime) and an accessory after the fact (someone who helps a criminal evade justice).
